  • Fable Legends Will be a Free to Play Title

fable legends free to playIn a new announcement, Lionhead Studios have announced that Fable Legends will actually be releasing for free on both Windows 10 for PC and the Xbox One. The game will follow a free to play pricing model, allowing players to play for free, but charging for certain in-game items or features.

This announcement comes as a bit of a surprise, as this is the first time Lionhead have mentioned the game will not have a price tag. In a similar vein to League of Legends, players will be given a free weekly rota of Heroes to play as, and each week the free Heroes will change.

If players like a certain Hero, they can purchase them to play with indefinitely. Players will be able to use real money to purchase the Heroes, or they can accumulate in-game currency to spend on the Heroes.

When it comes to playing the Villain, players will be given all of the Villain's mobs and traps for free, but they will only be able to use each trap and mob designed for each mission. If a mob has been designed for a mission, and you would like to use it on another mission, you will need to unlock that mob by spending real money or in-game currency on it.

Another monetization feature includes loot crates that contain random items. These can once again be purchased by both currencies. I think by the sounds of it, Fable Legends could be very balanced in terms of pay to win potential, but we'll have to see how it plays out once it has been released.

  • Lionhead Currently Working on Brand New IP

Lionhead new IPWhilst part of Lionhead is currently hard at work on the brand new multiplayer-centric Fable Legends, new information suggests that Peter Molyneux's ex game development studio will also be working on another project, completely separate from the Fable universe.

According to Lionhead creative director Gary Carr, there is currently a team of eight working on trying to "build the next big IP." Carr mentioned that his team is throwing around a few prototypes, as well as planning a few games that could be added to the Fable Legends experience.

Whilst it's probably going to be a while before we actually see any official progress by Lionhead on the new IP, they seem pretty confident about going forward. New studio head, John Needham recently mentioned that "The primary purpose of the group is to come up with new game IP, and hopefully this time next year we'll have something exciting to talk about," when asked about the new team of eight working within the Lionhead studio.

Needham continued by talking about Lionhead's history, "There is great IP in Lionhead's history, it's just spotty who owns what. Clearly we're going to be investing most of the studio's efforts into Fable, but we'll have some new IP to share with you soon."

I think it will be exciting to see what Lionhead have in store for us next. Even without Peter Molyneux at the helm of the ship, there's still a lot of potential for the British based development studio.
