Shinji Mikami Brings Bethesda into Survival Horror Gaming
According to news from Joystiq, it seems that a mysterious but interesting project called "Project Zwei" is a project involving Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and his Bethesda Softworks-supported group Tango Gameworks. This codename for this project was revealed to Famitsu (Japan's leading source of video game news) where Mikami stated that the game will be a survival horror game, drawing elements from the Resident Evil series.
In addition, the interview revealed that the game is still rather early in development. He said that the game won't be out this year but sometime within [...]

The Japanese COD: Elite Service is Cancelled Due to Localization Issues
Unfortunate news for Japanese FPS fans, it seems that the Japanese version of Call of Duty: Elite will not be available. The online service was cancelled due to localization issues, according to some news from Kotaku and Square Enix, COD's publisher in Japan.
According to Square Enix and Activision, they worked really hard to get localized versions of Elite released in territories like Japan but kept getting stuck in issues about localization. The biggest problem for Modern Warfare 3 in Japan was that the game was available in a subtitled version [...]

Shiro Suzuki Thanks Resident Evil for Making Him Live So Long
Shiro Suzuki, a famed actor and broadcaster in Japan, loves to play Resident Evil games a lot. Kotaku and many other sources found out that he was a gamer when he told them that he discovered gaming over fifteen years ago. However after all those years, the Resident Evil series (or Biohazard as the Japanese call it) continues to be his favorite to this day.
At the recent Resident Evil event, celebrating the game's anniversary, Shiro Suzuki spoke about his love of the series but also his love for video games.
"I [...]

Despite Lack of Sales in the Region, They're Opening a XBox 360 Store in Japan
As you have read in my previous blogs, Microsoft's XBox 360 isn't doing that well in Japan. Microsoft's lack of success is huge as it only sells from two to three thousand consoles a week in Japan. And with news of pulling most materials for the console from Japanese stores, it hasn't stopped one shop in Yamaguchi Prefecture from making a store dedicated to the XBox 360 (according to this article on Kotaku).
Japanese blogger Mirian, who runs Xbox 360-centric blog Hakomaru Purasu opened an Xbox 360-centric [...]

The 3DS Still Beats Out the Vita in Japan
Despite that it's not out here in the states, the PlayStation Vita is currently out in Japan. Its release was met with the usual kinds of enthusiasm and long lines. And it has met tons of favorable praise from the hordes of Sony faithful as well as local Japanese media outlets. However, when it comes to making comparisons with its competitor, Nintendo and its 3DS, that's a bit of a different story.
The sales numbers from the latest reports show that Nintendo still dominates the portable gaming console market, despite the huge sales [...]

Japan's Sales Charts Show That They Love Modern Warfare 3.
So according to some news from Joystiq, it seems that Japan really likes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on both consoles, they just like the PS3 version more. But that is expected if you have read my earlier blog posts about the relationship between the Xbox 360 and the land of the rising sun. Anyway, the numbers show that Activision's latest FPS title has topped the Japanese game sales charts at number one with over 180,000 units sold. As for the Xbox 360, it is holding at seventh place with [...]

Club Nintendo's Japanese Platinum Members Can Get the Most Awesome Throw Pillow Ever
Japan gets all the cool stuff, they have businessmen dressed as Mario and Luigi riding fast Japanese-made go-karts, vending machines that vend fully cooked curry, and now they have Mario Throw Pillows (as seen here on Joystiq). Yes, you heard me. If you're a platinum member of Japan's Club Nintendo, you will be receiving a throw pillow (also known as a love pillow) of an 8-bit Mario.

Japanese Car SiteCliccar Roams the Streets of Tokyo in a Real Life Game of Mario Kart
Two writers from the Japanese car siteCliccar decided to get out of their usual business attire for a while and have some fun. How did they do that? Well how about getting two street legalX-Karts and roam the streets of Tokyo as both Mario and Luigi in a real life game of Super Mario Kart (minus the banana throwing and shell tossing).
These karts are priced at ¥ 379,800 (US$4,900) and are designed as "mini sports cars". The "mini sports cars" are weighing in at only [...]

The Gears of War Series is Doing Great in Japan
So as you know, I like to report how western games are doing in Japan. Usually, when Japan's gaming community are exposed to games made in the west, they usually have a wide range of excitement (from "meh" to "omg that was awesome"). Lately, it's been "meh" with the decline of the Xbox 360 in the region. However there was a surprise at this year's Tokyo Game Show as there was a lot of excitement surrounding the series. Many members of the Japanese press talked about huge interest in the [...]
