  • Super Slim PS3 Details and Pricing

Sony is literally horrible at keeping new hardware news secret. Months before its official release there were rumors going around that Sony was coming up with a new "super slim" version of the old PS3. By old PS3 I mean the very first generation, you know the ones that weighed a ton.

Sony is known to release slimmer version of their consoles as they did for the PS2 so everyone expected a PS3 Slim somewhere down the pipeline. However, I for one did not expect a slimmer version of the PS3 Slim. The rumors mentioned the newer model might be a bit cheaper and also arrive somewhere around TGS 2012.

Thanks to Sony's official reveal, once again we see that rumors in the video game industry are much more reliable than those in any other industry. The Playstation 3 Super Slim was revealed on the 17th of September on TGS and the details of the new model are as follows.

    Specifications:

There is nothing really different about this model as compared to the predecessors. It is still not backwards compatible like the original PS3 and is about 25% lighter and 20% less in volume compared to the PS3 Slim. We don’t have to do the math to know that this means it's a LOT smaller and lighter than the FAT PS3 (is it actually the official name for it or have people just termed it that?).

    Versions and Release Dates:

There are several version of the device coming out and are priced according to the following regions.

    North America

    - 250GB - $269 (Uncharted 3/Dust 514 Bundle) - September 25th
    - 500GB - $299 - October 30th

    Europe and PAL Territories

    - Flash Memory 12GB - 229 Euros, AUD $299.95, NZD $399.95 - October 12th (September 27th AU, October 18th NZ)
    - 500GB - 299 Euros, AUD $399.95, NZD $519.95 - September 28th (September 27th ANZ)

    Japan

    - 250GB - 24,900 Yen - October 4th
    - 500GB - 29,800 Yen - October 4th

As you can see there are mainly 3 versions, 250GB, 500GB and 12GB Flash memory models. Currently the bundle has only been announced for North America. Basically the bundle gets you Uncharted 3 for free and also a voucher for more than $30 worth of bonus content for Dust 514. I guess Sony is still trying to get the North Americans to let go of the Xbox 360 this holiday season.

  • Next-Gen Consoles to Launch in 2013

It seems like everyone has been waiting forever to witness the release of the next-gen consoles. Out of the three giants Nintendo has already revealed its next-gen console (the Wii U) which is expected to hit stores somewhere near fall of this year. Microsoft and Sony on the other hand are still very quiet.

It's like an old school standoff with Sony and Microsoft keeping a very close eye one other. I bet they are also keeping a watch on Nintendo but I highly doubt either company really sees Nintendo as a threat. We all know why. Nintendo makes amazing 1st party titles but without proper 3rd party titles it is going to be really hard for Nintendo to catch-up to the other two.

I guess Nintendo knows this fact well and based on this they decided to launch Wii U ahead of the competition. But according to new rumors Nintendo might not have the luxury of a huge gap anymore. A few GameStop employees have recently come forth to reveal that that either one or both next-gen consoles will be launched in 2013.

You probably think it is another rumor but I am glad to tell you otherwise. Just recently the CEO of GameStop Paul Rines himself told Polygon that one of the next gen-consoles has already been fixed for launch next year! I quote, "We have not been expecting two more consoles in 2013. We're expecting Wii U this holiday, another one next year, and another one in '14."

So this leads to the next question, which one is coming out on 2013? Will it be the Xbox 720 aka Durango or PS4 aka Orbis? It is a bit confusing really. We all know that PS3 fell behind in sales due to its late entry to the market so it would make sense for it to launch earlier but, the PS3 is still crunching out awesome games (The Last Of Us, Beyond: Two Souls) so there is no rush for the next console just yet.

On the other hand the Xbox 360 hasn't aged so well and is in need of an upgrade and in order to repeat their previous success they are most probably considering an early release. Honestly it's anyone’s guess right now. Heck even Sony and Microsoft might not know when to launch! Either way we get to see a new-console. 2013 sure sounds like a good year for gamers.

With years of gaming available left on your current consoles, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, be sure to grab a custom controller to match your experience. Modded Controllers are also available.

  • Next-Gen Xbox and Playstation Might Be Announced Soon

Next Generation Of Consoles Are Close

You guys should have already read about the Brian Hall, General Manager of Windows Live, referring to the "new Xbox" during his interview with The Verge. Soon after that though Microsoft came in and said that his statement was taken out of context and that Hall was actually referring to the Xbox 360 which is about to get an update that would bring a host of new consumer experiences like Xbox Music, Videos, SmartGlass etc.

But in a surprising turn of events the President of EA Labels, Frank Gibeau, mentioned during his keynote address at the opening ceremony of Gamescom that he has actually SEEN both the next-gen Xbox and Playstation. Goes to show that even though Sony and Microsoft might remain tight lipped about their upcoming consoles, other figures in the industry might not. Good for us!

During his keynote when he was speaking in regard to the future of the industry he said, "I've seen both of them". He continued to add, "Ten years ago we used to measure our market in terms of 200 million people. Now we are at a billion people playing games and we have a straight line view on 2 billion." He also concluded his keynote with, "Free-to-play will become the dominant pricing model by the end of the decade."

This marks the very first SOLID referral towards the next-gen consoles; one that cannot be taken back or covered up. Since this is pretty much what he said, it is still unclear whether Frank Gibeau saw the final products or just early prototypes. But it seems in either case, FREE TO PLAY is the way to go. This fact is also supported by analysts throughout who have already come to the conclusion that the only price gamers want to pay to play is FREE.

Regardless of what the future holds at least we got some solid proof of the consoles instead of more rumors. Also the fact that Frank Gibeau so openly stated the existence of these consoles brings to question whether Microsoft and Sony would also be doing some announcing of their own. One can surely be hopeful.

Our modded Xbox controllers are definitely our number 1 seller, but which console do you plan to get during the next generation and what kinds of mods do you hope to see? Let us know. Plan on getting both or just one of them?

  • Nexon Rumored to Buy Electronic Arts

South Korean Company Nexon to Bid on EA for Takeover

Accord to Joystiq, Nexon, the South Korean MMO company that created Maple Story is a pretty big player in the East. It's so big, it's thinking about and looking at possibilities of buying out a competitor from the West, Electronic Arts. Yes, THAT Electronic Arts. MK Business News, a South Korean newspaper, has reported that Nexon's Japanese headquarters spoke with EA about acquiring the company. However, it is unclear what the negotiations have come to. EA isn't saying anything according to all of its representatives.

But the bigger question is if this deal is possible in the first place. Many people don't think so. Michael Pachter (Wedbush Securities analyst and host of Pach-Attack on GameTrailers.com) sated that it is highly improbable.

"There are few, if any synergies, and no reason to believe that Nexon could run EA's assets more efficiently. Nexon shareholders would own a completely different company than what they bought in the December IPO..."

So for now, it seems all these talks about an EA takeover is interesting to talk about. But it's highly and very unlikely for a deal to be happening in the near future.
