  • Rumored Playstation 4 Specs Roundup

    PlayStation 4 Specs

With high hopes of Playstation 4 coming out within the next year (best case scenario), we decide to take a look at all info about PS4 made available since April of this year. We shall try our best to summarize all info available on the rumored PS4, codenamed Orbis.

Well first off the bat is the fact that this time around there would be an advanced piracy blocking system. We all knew they were really going to increase the security of next gen systems. Additionally the reuse of games will also be blocked. This would supposedly be achieved via a download from the Playstaion Network that would lock the Blu-Ray to a specific system thus, rendering reuse of Blu-Ray discs impossible.

Okay now let's look at something a bit more cheerful, the specs of this upcoming bad boy. Rumors suggest that the chips in the PS4 would be based on AMD's A8-3850 APU and Radeon HD 7670 GPU. The A8-3850 is a quad-core 2.9 GHz processor which also has an integrated graphics chip. The Radeon HD 7670 GPU is a DirectX 11 enabled card clocked at 1 GHz and has 1 GB of VRAM.

Based on the fact the HD 7670 is identical to last year's HD 6670, some basic assumptions could be made. The HD 6670 has the capability to render Crysis 2 in high settings at a resolution of 1920 X 1080 (full HD) with frame rates slightly above 30 fps. This chip can also support the HDMI 1.4a output which is required for the rumored 4K resolution output of the PS4.

It is expected that with the use of a lightweight OS and optimized games, the overall performance of the system is going to be much better. The main advantage of Sony is the fact that the A8-3850 has the integrated HD 6550D which would allow them to utilize asymmetrical CrossFire configuration to share the load of graphics processing.

As you can see guys, the rumored PS4 is a verifiable gaming monster. But keep in mind that the exact chipsets might change in the final product. Also even if they use the exact chips mentioned above, considering that they will be custom made for the console we can pretty much be certain that the final specs will vary. Of course any change made will only make the system better.

  • Sony acquires Gaikai Cloud Service

Gaikai Cloud Service on a Sony Console

Sony has confirmed its plans to acquire the cloud gaming service Gaikai for a lump sum of $380 million. Why you wonder? Andrew House, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, shed a bit more light on the matter.

Mr. House mentioned that Sony is currently aiming to create a new cloud service which will allow users to experience a wide variety of content "instantly" on the go from pretty much any internet connected devices; the content would range from HD movies and videos to hard core 3D games.

There were a lot of rumors going about this deal all the way to E3 this year where sources were claiming that Sony was trying to significantly improve its cloud gaming support. Gaikai's service has been quite sought after recently; not so long ago they teamed up with Samsung to allow users to stream games directly on to their Samsung TVs via a built-in app.

What makes the situation a bit weird is the fact that recent reports suggests that Gaikai is planning to sell off the company for a sum of $500 million (a mere $120 million less than what they got from Sony). I guess we have to wait and see if that is true and what would be its consequences.

For now, no specific details regarding how Sony would actually utilize Gaikai's server has been mentioned. David Perry, CEO of Gaikai, had this to say about the matter, Sony is aiming to "harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide."

I guess we should be excited? Although the deal has been confirmed, it is yet to be finalized. Seems there are a few more regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions still left to be tackled. But all we gamers care is about how is it going to make our gaming experience better. Don't make us wait too long to find out Sony!

  • PS4 has been in development since 2010?

PlayStation 4 in Development Since 2010

Last week new info emerged that hints at the fact that the Playstation 4, codenamed ORBIS, has been in development since 2010.

This speculation arose after the discovery of the LinkedIn account of a man named Attila Vass. This guy worked in Playstation for about 14 years. As expected he has worked in a number of major projects including the Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita. Now, the interesting part is that in his resume he also mentions he worked with the "Next Playstation".

Considering the fact that this could not be the PS Vita (since that is listed already), there is high chance that this "Next Playstation" could very well be Playstation 4! Now that is quite big news. Sony has been adamant in denying anything and everything regarding PS4 and has repeatedly said that they are not considering the PS4 unless they could guarantee a big leap over the current generation. Well, this info proves otherwise.

On his resume Attila mentioned that he worked on graphics, graphics library, cloud services and security of the "Next Playstation", starting from mid 2010 till April in 2012 when he left Sony. Now if you think back to the fact that Sony just acquired the cloud gaming service Gaikai, it all starts to tie together. Considering all this, we can actually expect the launch of the PS4 very soon. Critics are speculating that we can hope to see it by the Tokyo Game Show or by E3 next year at the latest.

  • PS3 Super Slim

    New PS3 Super Slim Console

It seems that we might be getting another PS3, yes not a PS4 but another model of the current PS3 in the near future. This piece of news was concluded from documents that had been submitted to the Federal Communications Commission by Sony.

The upcoming series has been filed under the tag of CECH-4001x thus making it the 4000 series while the current model is the 3000 series. Although no one has claimed that there is going to be a slimmer model, most of us can already guess that would be the case. Anytime Sony launches another model it basically is just a slimmer version of the original.

It seems these documents contained a series of pictures which pitted the future model against the current. From the direct comparison it was seemingly quite clear that this rumored 4000 series was slimmer than the PS3 Slim and thus, a "super slim" version of the original.

It seems critics are speculating that if this rumored model is actually real, then it will be revealed at Gamescom this year. Considering that the PS3 Slim was also revealed at Gamescom, this speculation might not be that far off mark.

What I am wondering is, would it be just a slimmer (and cheaper?) version of the current PS3 Slim, or is it going to have other changes as well? What do you guys think? Would you consider buying it if it is just a Super Slim PS3?

If you love your current PS3, then stay tuned for Evil announcements regarding PS3 controllers. Evil plans to upgrade the available options currently available for the PS3 to allow for some truly custom controllers.

  • Pre-Order Cards Show Black Ops 2's Release Date as November 13th

A Source from Target Shows Black Ops 2's Release Date

With so many leaks about Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, you could swear that its release is no longer a rumor, but rather confirmed news. From leaks from outside sources and teasers from Activision, I think we can all agree, Black Ops 2 is coming.

Recently a source from Target emailed IGN an interesting image. An image of a Target pre-order card confirming both the title and the release date for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. The release date is confirmed as November 13th of this year. Which is odd since it's about one week after the release of Halo 4.

Which game will you pick up?
