  • Valve's VR Set Coming in April

    HTC Vive

In February, pre-orders for the co-built Vive VR headset from HTC and Valve will begin. The release date for the Vive will be set for an April launch after this. The exact opening for pre-orders will begin February 29.

Whilst the HTC Vive is still a very new piece of technology, in a few month's time we could see a lot of support by various game developers. The HTC Vive developer kit was sent out on January 5 so developers will already be able to begin developing VR options for their titles. It may be a long while before VR makes it to most mainstream AAA titles, if it does come at all, but it will be incredibly exciting to see virtual reality like the HTC Vive on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Because the Vive is co-owned by Valve, it is very likely that the virtual reality headset will be used primarily alongside Steam, a PC gaming client owned by Valve. We may never see console support for the HTC Vive but it will potentially show us what VR could be capable of on all platforms.

The Vive isn't the only virtual headset available for pre-order. On January 6 the Occulus Rift also made it's way online for pre-order. This headset currently is available for pre-order for a hefty $600 and it will be available to the public on March 28. Prices for VR is bound to be very high to begin with but we may see price drops over the next few months. Hopefully in two years the technology will be affordable for the average gamer and the VR-supported game library will be quite expansive.

  • New Witcher 3 1.12 Update Released

    Witcher 3 1.12

A brand new patch for the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt has been released and it features a number of changes to both the new expansion and the base game. The new Witcher 3 patch is numbered 1.12 and some of the biggest changes include improvements to general game performance and some much needed tweaks to the quests in the Hearts of Stone.

Besides the general Hearts of Stone tweaks, a number of gameplay changes have been made. All of the important gameplay changes have been listed below.

+ Fixes issue whereby some toxic gas clouds failed to poison or deal damage to player character. Fixes issue whereby scabbard meshes were missing from witchers other than Geralt.

+ Fixes rare issue whereby attacks performed near friendly NPCs resulted in unintended regeneration of Stamina.

+ Fixes exploit involving Alchemy skill titled Tissue Transmutation.

+ Fixes issue whereby quickslots could disappear if game difficulty level was changed during combat.

+ Fixes exploit involving Superior White Raffard's Decoction and skill named Delayed Recovery. + Fixes rare issue whereby skill named Flood of Anger incorrectly enabled Signs Tree and enhanced Sign Intensity permanently.

+ Introduces fix whereby special bonus granted by Superior Blizzard will take effect only when slow-motion is triggered.

+ Fixes a number of issues affecting potion called Chort decoction.

+ Fixes rare issue whereby some mini-bosses could become immortal under certain circumstances.

+ Fixes misleading message displayed when players attempted to cast Signs in combat, while enveloped by a cloud resulting from the detonation of a Dimeritium Bomb.

  • Gears of War 4 Pushed to Fall 2016

    gears of war 4

It has become quite common for developers to push back the release date of games and rightfully so. With a delayed release, developers are given a better chance to fine tune a game before it launches. Gears of War 4 has not had much shown off to the world so it would come as no surprise if the game had to be delayed.

What is surprising though is that Gears of War 4 has just been pushed forward. This means that the game will be available earlier than previously anticipated. In the past, Gears of War 4 was set for release in the 2016 Holidays but it has now been pushed forward to Fall 2016.

Whilst this jump in time isn't that significant, it should mean that gamers will be able to purchase the upcoming Gears of War title before the inevitable holiday rush for other new releases that happens each year. Fortunately we will be getting a glimpse of Gears of War 4 before Fall 2016. In Spring, a beta for Gears of War 4 will be available online.

Whilst there is no guaranteed access for Gears of War 4's beta, a random selection of 1 million Gears of War: Ultimate Edition owners will get to play the beta first. There were no details on whether other players will be able to play beyond this original 1 million but with under 2 million sales, it's likely that over half of the Ultimate Edition population will be able to play the Gears of War 4 beta.

  • Destiny Players Getting Free New Years Items

    destiny new years emblem

Happy New Years folks! To celebrate the new year, Bungie has picked out a bunch of gifts to hand out to all active Destiny players. On January 7, all Destiny players will receive 15 strange coins and 15 motes of light. These forms of currency can be used to purchase items from the travelling trader Xur.

To access your New Year gift, just head to the postmaster in the Tower after January 7 and you will be able to pick up the 15 strange coins and 15 motes of light.

On top of the free currency, Bungie are offering an extra reward for any players who stay active during the new year. If you log into Destiny on either January 7, January 8, January 9 or January 10 you will be rewarded with a unique exclusive emblem. It's important that you complete a playable activity if you log in to collect the emblem. This could simply be a quick Crucible match, a Raid or any other activity that ends with a loot screen.

If you participate in the New Year emblem challenge then you will be able to use the emblem after January 12. On the 12th of January the emblem should arrive at the postmaster if you make sure to complete a playable activity during the days mentioned above.

Besides the emblem and the free currency, Bungie doesn't have any other gifts to offer for the New Year but there is bound to be a lot of content in the works for 2016.

  • Star Wars Battlefront Won't Have Episode 7 DLC

    Star Wars Battlefront Episode 7

With the release of Battlefront in November and Star Wars Episode 7 in December, it seems like perfect sense to add some Episode 7 themed DLC into Battlefront in the near future. Unfortunately DICE has revealed that they do not have any plans to release any Episode 7 themed content for the new Battlefront and in fact Battlefront will only include content from the original prequel trilogy.

DICE definitely has some DLC in plan for Battlefront in 2016 but all of the new maps and content will be themed around episodes 4, 5 and 6.

You may be wondering why DICE decided to create the Battle of Jakku map if Battlefront will only focus on the first three movies. According to Star Wars lore, Battlefront's Battle of Jakku map takes place 29 years before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so whilst it's still ahead of the first prequel episodes, it still is within the realms of Star Wars Episode 6 as opposed to The Force Awakens.

The news came via a Twitter post, which read as, "Our team is focusing on the original trilogy for this release of Star Wars Battlefront."

The way this is worded is quite interesting. Whilst it does mean that Battlefront will not be getting any non-prequel content for the release of the game, EA and DICE may make plans to make content based on Episode 7 in the future. If there are future Battlefront games, these could also include content from different Star Wars eras.

  • Destiny Sparrow Racing League Has Finished

    Destiny Sparrow Racing League

Destiny's Sparrow Racing League has now ended and players can no longer play this particular game mode. For those unaware, Sparrow Racing League was a unique PVP mode added to Destiny that allowed players to race each other in Sparrows. This is the first time Bungie has added a PVP game mode that has a main focus besides shooting.

Now that Sparrow Racing League has come to a close, Bungie will be replacing it with The Iron Banner for a short while before introducing another timed PVP game mode. The Iron Banner has already been in Destiny two times since the release of The Taken King and this is now the third time.

The Iron Banner features basic PVP combat just like the standard Crucible game mode but there are some standout features that make it very different. Unlike the standard Crucible mode, the Iron Banner has level advantages enabled, which means that weapons with higher attack ratings do more damage. In the Crucible, all gear is leveled out to make an equal playing field.

If you have a higher light level in The Iron Banner you'll have a much better chance at taking down players with lower light levels than you.

In the past, The Iron Banner game mode has been available for a week before being taken offline again so it is likely that once again the newly added game mode will be available for a week before being replaced with something else.

  • Dying Light Getting 250 Legendary Levels

    Dying Light Legendary Levels#

In February Dying Light will receive a new update that is free for all players. The new update adds 250 legendary levels to add more progression to the end-game state of Dying Light. If you're a Dying Light player that has already completed Dying Light to 100% but you're still looking for a challenge, the 250 legendary levels should grab your interest.

The 250 new levels allow players to continue to unlock new content after each level up - new unlocks can include new gear, weapons, outfits emblems and even new skills.

Once a skill tree has been maxed out, you will then start to gain experience points for a new skill tree. The additional experience points will go towards the new legendary levels. Inside of the legendary levels skill tree you are given the ability to choose new upgrades to important stats such as damage, stamina and health, along with others.

Whilst base stats can be upgraded once per legendary level, you will only get access to additional rewards such as emblems, outfits and new weapons each 25 levels.

Like mentioned before, the legendary levels will be available as part of a free update for all existing Dying Light owners. Alternatively newcomers to the game can purchase the Dying Light Enhanced Edition once it has been released in February to get the content as well.

Legendary levels is just one of many new features planned for release in February 2016. It's starting to look like the Enhanced Edition update may be the biggest free game update any AAA console game has received in a long time.

  • New Metal Gear Online Content Coming

    Metal Gear Online

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be getting new DLC soon that will be exclusive to the Metal Gear Online portion of the game. Konami has announced their plans for the new Metal Gear Online content and has also explained about exactly what content players will be able to expect soon.

The first and most exciting feature coming to Metal Gear Online is a new game mode named Survival. Not many details were given about Survival but it is assumed that it will be similar to the timed Survival Mode events that were occasionally hosted by Konami in Metal Gear Online on MGS4. Hopefully the Survival Mode that is coming to the new Metal Gear Online will remain as a permanent playlist instead of a timed event.

Konami also plans to release new maps for Metal Gear Online soon, although once again details for these were not shared. The Metal Gear Online Twitter page posted the following information.

"New DLC planned for MGO, including new maps, Survival, and more! Further details to come."

In more news, a new update has been released for Metal Gear Online that adds a few tweaks to weapon values and also decreases the amount of XP that is needed for each level. This will essentially make leveling up in MGO take a lot less effort than before.

The new update is rather small and has been released for free but the maps and Survival Mode are likely to cost additional money.

  • Rise of the Tomb Raider Endurance Mode Added

Rise of the Tomb Raider Endurance

A brand new game mode has been added to Rise of the Tomb Raider and it can be purchased as add-on DLC for the game.

The new game mode is called Endurance and it adds some interesting survival features into the world of Tomb Raider. By adding the game parameters of Endurance mode into a playthrough, a player can experience a drastically different game when compared to the vanilla version of Rise of the Tomb Raider.

In Endurance mode, the survival aspects are based around food and warmth. Just like in real life, Lara Croft must eat regularly in Rise of the Tomb Raider's new Endurance mode to stay alive. Players can hunt for wildlife in the day, but the increased day/night cycle speed means that you'll spending a lot more time in the cold dark night.

When temperatures drop late at night, players will also need to provide warmth for Lara Croft to ensure that she does not freeze to death. One of the biggest aspects for keeping Lara warm involves collecting fuel for fire.

Finally, necessary weapons that may be given easily to players in the standard version of Rise of the Tomb Raider must be crafted in Endurance mode from materials found in the game environment.

Crystal Dynamics wrote a blog post about the new Endurance update, stating that "Fire takes fuel, cold kills the unprepared, food restores health, but everything must be caught, collected, or crafted. You start with nothing and must find everything."

The new Endurance mode is part of the Rise of the Tomb Raider season pass but it can also be purchased for $10 as separate standalone DLC.
