Are Next-Gen Consoles are Selling without Next-Gen Games?
In 2022, there is a software development battle and new console models from Sony and Microsoft are struggling to keep up with it. The promise of software is always better than the hardware. Still, the holiday season was busy and online stores continue to offer new Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
What’s startling is that no new-generation games are on the list for either of these consoles. Currently, Sony’s 2022 release lineup covers PlayStation 4 and 5. On the other hand, Microsoft celebrates Xbox Series X with a cross-gen release like Halo and Forza franchises.
Next-Gen Games in No Sight
It has been a little over a year since the arrival of PS5 and Xbox Series X, but next-gen gaming is nowhere in sight. In fact, there are a handful of games that can leverage the full capabilities of Ps5 and Xbox Series X. Of course, enthusiasts and curious gamers are still buying the new consoles from Microsoft and Sony. But the new age of console gaming deserves next-gen games in 2022.
In 2021, the major fall release was Far Cry 6 which can run on old and new consoles. During interviews and press conferences, game development companies have started to avoid questions on whether or not they plan to develop next-gen games anytime sooner.
Complex and Interconnected Gaming Market
Experts understand that the market situation has become complex that has created a bottleneck for next-gen games. The idea of getting new physical consoles without next-gen games is regressive. Unlike previous console generations which had exclusively developed games, there is a lack of developed games for PS5 and Xbox X.
“Other” Next-Gen Games
Apart from next-generation exclusive games like Microsoft Flight Simulator and Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, all next-gen game releases are available on PC and older consoles. Remember that Call of Duty: Vanguard and Battlefield 2042 were available on PS4 and as well as Xbox One. The same standards were applied to Battlefield 2042 and Call of Duty: Vanguard.
Unfortunately, this trend did not pass on to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, and gamers are stuck with a few next-gen games to play on these consoles. But unlike PS5 where the compatibility of next-gen games has been troublesome, Microsoft continues to impress gamers in the form of concurrent releases. Again, it does not change the fact that Sony’s proprietary games have had a great track record. Unfortunately, Demon’s Soul remains to be the only most-played title on Sony’s PlayStation 5 console.
Throughout 2021, the common perception in the market was that it will take a generational transition. In 2022, it is evident that next-gen games are far behind new consoles. It is no wonder game developers and publishers have started to feel the pressure to release new next-gen games. After a year, it is hard to grapple that both PlayStation 5 and Xbox X don’t have a diverse collection of next-gen games.
