Borderlands 2 Exploit Ripples through Xbox Live
Borderlands 2 Exploit
If you're playing Borderlands 2 with people you don't know on Xbox Live, you may want to be careful. Hackers have found a way into Borderlands 2 code and have come across a 'hardcore mode' left in the code within the game. If you die with hardcore mode activated, your character data would be completely wiped from the game. Hardcore mode creates extra tension by making gameplay much more risky, forcing players to think twice about their actions in-game. However, the exploit in code has opened up possibilities for other players without the hardcore mode to lose their progress when playing with others who have the code activated.
Gearbox have called the attacks on unwitting players as an act of "sabotage" and have also sent out a patch for the game to cancel out the game ruining exploit. Players are still reporting lost accounts after dying over Xbox Live though, and some players still have access to the terrible glitch via an external application which allows them to access the previous code and use it on unsuspecting players over Xbox Live.
Gearbox Community Manager, Chris Faylor, left a few words on the official Borderlands forums to give advice to players to help avoid losing their saved games. "Recently a few users have begun violating the Xbox Live Code of Conduct by using an external application to maliciously disrupt the experience and sabotage characters of legitimate Borderlands 2 players on Xbox 360.
After extensive internal testing, an update to prevent this disruption has been submitted to Microsoft and will be released as soon as possible. Until then, concerned Xbox 360 players of Borderlands 2 should consider playing online with trusted individuals in non-public sessions. This does not affect players on PC or PlayStation 3."
Faylor ended the post by asking for the community’s support to help stop the exploit being spread any further. "We ask that players report any suspicious behavior in Borderlands 2 to firstname.lastname@example.org and provide as much details and documentation of their disrupted experience as possible to assist us in our investigation,"
If you play Borderlands 2 on Xbox Live, it may be best if you avoid playing with unfamiliar players until this exploit has been worked around.
