  • Billy Mitchell Opens an Arcade

Record breaker opens up Arcade near Orlando Airport

If you watched "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters," you know Billy Mitchell, the man who has been sort of labeled as the evil villain of the retro-arcade gaming world. Well he recently opened an arcade at Orlando's airport with the name that of the movie. What's more oddly enough is that with good guy Steve Wiebe is also featured as part of the arcade's entrance as seen here but I think the way Billy made the picture was to glorify himself and make Steve look a bit....dull and confused. If that's true, the guy's living up to the vision that was given to him in the movie. However....

With the arcade sporting the name of the movie, it must mean everyone's on....possibly Steve also. Which could mean that the rivalry between the two turned into some kind of across the borders mutual relationship. That's one possibility. Who knows?

While the arcade is up and running stocked it doesn't have a Donkey Kong machine. And also it lacks the classic titles of the past, since it sports the movie's name and the movie was about record breaking in the retro gaming world. My guess is that the airport business staff likely didn't see the movie and thought more modern games would generate more income.

    The arcade sports the following:

    • Dead Heat
    • Terminator Salvation
    • Super Bikes 1 (2 sets of them)
    • Avatar pinball machine
    • Air hockey table
    • Aliens Extermination

If are you are at Orlando International Airport, best to look for this arcade...despite the lack of RETRO ARCADE GAMES in an ARCADE that sports the name of a movie about RETRO ARCADE GAMES.

  • King of Kong on the Big Screen?

Industry News - King of Kong to be in a Theater near you?

Billy Mitchell and Steve Weibe are known for the ongoing battle for the title of King of Kong. They both have spent a significant portion of time trying to get the best score on the original Donkey Kong game. Their documentary "King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" is greatly known throughout the gaming world and has developed a cult following. If you thought we couldn't get enough of these two, you were WRONG!

There have been talks about making a featured film. They are currently working on the script and working with New Line Cinema. It is going to be interesting to see if they capture the magic from the documentary and put it a scripted film.

There are some concerns about making this movie. The success of this movie was a complete shock to many. The timing and release of the original documentary helped to make it successful. The writers for the new film will need to address that we are in a different era, where Donkey Kong and Mario are not the face of gaming but Halo and Call of Duty. Instead, these games have moved into the classic realm of gaming. They represent gaming nostalgia. This should be interesting project for New Line to work on, can't wait for it to come out.

  • Wiebe beats the Hot Sauce King

Industry News - Steve Wiebe wins again!

Steve Wiebe reigns again! Twin Galaxies has officially releases a press release statement regarding the newest Donkey Kong arcade record. As of August 30, Washington state's Steve Wiebe now holds the world record once again with a score of 1,062,800, besting Billy Mitchell's July 31 title.

What a competition. King of Kong star Wiebe has not held the title since he made his mark in the spring of 2007, shown in the documentary "King of Kong". Mitchell pulled ahead shortly within a few months. In March, Hank Chien of New York pulled ahead to one-up Mitchell's previous three year held record. However, Mitchell fiercely regained the title this past July. Now, the down to earth family man Wiebe has set the new world record, officially verified as of today.

This is the third time in this year alone the world record has been shattered, the most changes to the official record made in a single year. Although he puts vast effort into live competing, Wiebe recorded this specific score to submit to Twin Galaxies. Could Mitchell still have an ace up his sleeve? I guess we will have to see if 2010 marks a fourth break in the record.

  • The Battle to Become The King of Kong Continues...

Gamer News - Billy Mitchell to Continue being a Record Holding Champion

Billy Mitchell was the first world record holder in the game of Donkey Kong, achieving this feat back in 1982, officially recognized by Twin Galaxies (Videogame authority). Billy has been recognized as somewhat of a prophet when it comes to arcade gaming, being called the "greatest arcade "€œvideogame player of all time". His score went untouched for years.

In 2007, "The King of Kong: a Fistful of Quarters" came out, chronicling the journey of Steve Wiebe, a Washington state teacher, and his attempt to dethrone the hot sauce king. As a documentary there is obviously some bias involved, but the filmmakers do Billy Mitchell justice, portraying him as an egocentric, and incredibly arrogant human being. He talks a big game, yet refuses to actually play.

Steve Wiebe went on to become the Donkey Kong record holder for both the live and recorded scores. On August 3, 2006, with a score of 1,049,100 points, Steve Wiebe took the title. The most recent record holder since then was Hank Chien, with a score of 1,061,700 in March of this year.

Billy Mitchell finally decided to be a man and play in person to reclaim his title; something he vehemently advocated yet wouldn't do. On July 24, 2010 Billy won the top place again with a live score of 1,062,800 in Donkey Kong. He then simply walked away"¦only to respond, "Some say I'm being cocky. Some say I'm being lazy. I say I'm being Billy Mitchell." And the wait for a challenger continues.
