Out of nowhere, Microsoft has geared up to announce Age of Empires IV. The game will launch for Xbox One and Windows, and it will also launch a definitive edition of the first three Age of Empires games.

So far, we know very little about Age of Empires IV besides the fact that it's coming. We do know that the studio responsible for Age of Empires IV will be the Microsoft Games Studio. Many of the developers from the original Age of Empires trilogy have moved on, so instead Microsoft has hired out the bulk of developers responsible for the Company of Heroes real time strategy franchise.

The development team made a statement alongside the Age of Empires IV announcement trailer.

"We can't wait to tap into our strengths as a studio to fuse historical context with deep strategic gameplay, and to bring this franchise back to the forefront of gaming and into the hands of its beloved community. We look forward to sharing with you more details in the months to come. For now, just know we are beyond excited to be working on the next entry into the legendary franchise."

The last Age of Empires title launched in 2011 as a free-to-play game for Windows. Many players didn't consider it worthy of the Age of Empires name, however, and the last game to get praise from critics across the globe was Age of Empires 3, which launched in 2005.

The Age of Empires Definitive Edition is set to launch exclusively for Windows 10 later this year in the Windows Store. The Definitive Edition will go on sale on October 19 and will include remastered versions of the first three Age of Empires games.
