Battlefield 4 Free DLC

An article keeps popping up on Computerandvideogames, and in fact, at the time of writing, it was the most popular post on the entire website, despite it being written around 4 years ago. The article reveals a story about DICE, and their overall succumb to publisher pressure, and the article, four years later, is filled with irony and unfortunately, not of the funny kind.

The article depicts an interview with DICE's senior producer at the time with Xbox World 360 Magazine asking all of the questions. One question that made the title of the article was about paid-for content, maps and DLC.

At the time a DLC pack for Modern Warfare 2 was released for 1200 Microsoft Points, however, it was met with quite a lot of frowns on that day. The reason for this was because DICE had released a free DLC pack on the exact same day for their game at the time, Battlefield Bad Company 2.

When asked about all of this, Patrick Bach, DICE's senior producer at the time, stated that "We don't ever want to charge for our maps and insisted to EA that this attitude was crucial when it came to keeping our community happy and playing together."

The unfortunate truth about this is that 4 years later, DICE have broken their promise, and I really do not doubt them. It's down to publishers like EA that are putting too much pressure on developers who just want to make good games, and whilst the gaming industry is still flourishing to this day, all of these business decisions being made by publishers in the form of DLC, micro-transactions and the like are causing the average game to become nothing more than a consumer and a customer, with a wallet filled with cash.

Patrick Bach's last sentence in the article was "We're owned by EA but we're still very much DICE," and I think those first few words wrap it all up really.
