Dead Island Riptide, a direct sequel to Techland's hit zombie survival game Dead Island, was announced by publisher Deep Silver quite some time ago at this year's E3. Since that initial reveal there was nothing else mentioned in the coming months except that it would cost $50.

But now it seems that Deep Silver is ready to slowly reveal some of the details surrounding the game. Just a few days ago Deep Silver released a press release that gave a bit of the story of the next iteration. The following is an excerpt from the press release:

"Having survived the ordeals of the zombie infestation on the once beautiful island resort of Banoi, our group of survivors thought they had finally found a safe place to escape from this terrifying nightmare, [but] they were wrong. Shortly after the battle-hardened team had landed their helicopter on a military ship, a furious storm hits and havoc quickly spreads on board. Suddenly they find themselves struggling for their lives again with all hope drowning in the rising waves."

The press release continued to add, "A monsoon has hit the once beautiful archipelago and heavy rainstorms have laid waste to large areas of the islands. The city of Henderson and jungle areas on the island of Palanai were flooded leaving boats as the only remaining way of transportation."

More details were seen from the official synopsis of the game which read, "Devastated by a monsoon, the island of Palanai is crawling with new zombie mutations. A fifth character with an all-new skillset will join the team, providing much needed support. Additional multiplayer communication features and brand new hub defence missions will test the survivors teamplay skills."

So it seems this time around instead on just one island, we might get to explore a group of islands. They also mentioned the city of Henderson which probably indicates to more gameplay in city environments. Also they seem to have implemented a dynamic weather system that we have to watch out for along with the zombies. Fighting zombies in the midst of a natural disaster does sound intriguing and isn’t something that has been tried yet.

Also we will be getting a fifth character with "all-new and unique skills" aside from the four from the original that will be making a comeback. The co-op side of the game seems to have also gotten some priority with the inclusion of "hub defence missions" during which survivors will "need to strategically place traps, fences and turrets to fend off oncoming Zombie onslaughts and to protect the humans in these sanctuaries." This is a smart move from Techland as the co-op aspect is what made the original more enjoyable (and the sort of glitches bearable).

For what it's worth, Dead Island was a good game that could have been great. I hope this time around they take their time fixing all kinks and bugs that tarnished the original. However I have great hope for this iteration since they developers already learnt a lot from the original and according to rumors, the pre-alpha for Dead Island 2 already looks better than Dead Island, which is INSANE!

That is all that has been revealed for now but I am sure Deep Silver and Techland will have a LOT more to say in the days to come. Dead Island Riptide is currently set to be released somewhere in 2013 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
