Watch Dogs

In my opinion, Ubisoft won this year's E3. They launched games on every possible platform and all of them looked amazing. They also had a nice little surprise for us at the end of their presentation. Ubisoft Montreal had been working on a new IP for a while which had been kept completely hidden. The game is called Watch Dogs and from the initial gameplay demo I can already tell you that this is going to be a keeper.

The game takes place in the future where everything electronic is run by a Central Operating System termed CTOS. So basically everything (subways, security cameras, traffic lights etc.) is run by the CTOS. Thanks to this, the Private Companies who control the system are nearly untouchable. Information is everything in this era.  Somehow our main character, Aiden Pierce, has gotten access to this system. He most probably hacked into it, but the back story hasn't been revealed yet.

Due to that, not only does Aiden have info on everyone in the city he resides in, he also has control over everything that is hooked up to the CTOS. The whole city is now basically his weapon and he can manipulate everything within it to obtain his objective.

The game is a GTA-like 3rd person shooter and it looks phenomenal. I was especially impressed by the voice acting and dialogue as I feel this is a crucial trait mostly ignored in games. The combat, cover and shooting mechanics also looked VERY tight. I especially love the part in the demo where he jumps across the car, takes out a foe and simultaneously picks up his weapon. Wow. (Check out the demo through the link below.)

But, the core of the game is "hacking". In the demo Aiden used his phone to hack security cameras and other people's phones in order to listen in and also to jam them. In the end he hacked into the traffic lights to create an accident which allowed him to get his hands on his target. I bet there are going to be several ways one can pull off a certain objective which gives the game a very sandboxy feel.

What was shown in the demo was just a sneak peek of what we can expect to see and I can't even imagine the possibilities of this hacking ability. Nothing aside from these tidbits have been revealed for now but, we will keep you posted as more details emerge. Till then, check out the official teaser trailer and the E3 gameplay demo.
