Epic Games programs two fates for Carmine in GOW3 in case of early spoiler leaks.

If you remember back in 2010, Epic Games stated that fans of Gears of War 3 will have a voice in the decision of what will happen to the character Carmine. This was done via purchasing one of the two shirts with one saying "Save Carmine" and another saying "Carmine must die". All the $150,000 of the proceeds from the two shirts went to the Penny Arcade charity Child's Play. But while the fundraising is done, the general public will not know the bacon-loving COG until the release of Gears of War 3 in September. However, with the always haunting threat of piracy and leaks,Epic Games has taken precautions to ensure the fate is a surprise, no matter what.

According toDigital Spy, the developers wrote both versions of Carmine's fate into Gears of War 3 to derail any possible leak attempts of spoiling the game's true content. When asked about any possible Carmine-leak issues at Germany's GamesCom last week, Epic Games president Mike Capps stated the following:

"We actually wrote both [endings] in the game just in case the game leaked so no-one would be able to tell what happens...and so we won't tell you now. [On] September 20 everyone will find out."

While it may not sound like a big deal to write and program in the alternative story for the fate of the bacon-lover, it was a smart decision in the long run and could serve to be an example of how video game developers can combat spoiling leaks in their games.
