Sony Unveils PS5 Controller, Console Details

Last week Sony announced details on their upcoming PS5 console, including giving details on the DualShock 5 controller.

Sony revealed that the console will launch during the holiday 2020 period, bringing with it a slew of new features, and of course, a new PlayStation 5 controller that’ll be packed with new features.

The console will support digital games, but will also bring a 4K UHD Blu-Ray drive, which will support 100 GB discs. This will allow for games to be loaded to the hard drive for those who don’t want to use their data limits on the internet. There will also be an SSD included, and load times are said to be nearly instantaneous. Sony is also promising ray tracing technology, which is built into the hardware, rather than using a software trick to pull off the feat. This is something seen in higher-end PCs and will work with a CPU based on the AMD Ryzen line.

The new PS5 controller is also getting a bit of an overhaul. The setup is said to look similar to the DualShock 4, but brings haptic feedback for more precise rumble features, with the feeling put into different locations in the pad. There will also be the ability for developers to manually adjust the tension of the R2/L2 triggers specific to their own games. This is something we’ve been able to do with our custom PlayStation controllers, but is a first for a major console developer. The DualShock 5 also is said to have more heft to it, making it feel more solid in your hands.

In a blog post on the PlayStation website SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan said, “With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense of a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.”

Needless to say, we’re geeked for the release of the new PS5 console, and we can’t wait to check out the PS5 controller for ourselves. Of course, we’re going to be keeping a lookout for the chance to make a Custom PS5 Controller, which will be even better than the stock unit. We always pride ourselves on modding controllers to give players an edge, and things like shift paddles and adjustable thumbstick tension are always on the top of our list. We’re also going to be looking to see how our Master Mod’s compatibility will be with this device.

We can’t say for sure, but there’s a possibility we’ll be able to offer a modded PS5 controller on Day 1 of the console’s launch, and we’ll do everything we can to make sure that’s a possibility.

More details on the PS5 launch will be coming in the coming months, and we’re excited to see just what the future will hold for the video game industry. We’re also waiting for details on the Xbox Scorpio project, which is slated for release for about the same time as the PS5.

Keep your eyes peeled and Evil Controllers will be updating our readers as we learn more
